Let's get into the Week 3 WR edition of Freedman's Favorites, where I highlight guys I'm upgrading because of …

  • Favorable betting factors and situational spots
  • Advantageous defensive matchups (perhaps aided by injury)
  • Increased usage expectations (again, maybe aided by injury)

Week 3 Matchup Upgrades: Amon-Ra St. Brown vs. Jets & Rashod Bateman vs. Cowboys

There are a few "flow chart" defenses so bad that they provide automatic upgrades to whatever WRs they face. If a guy is playing one of them, I aggressively move him up my ranks. If not, I carry on.

Based on the numbers I see in our Fantasy Life DvP (Defense vs. Position) Matrix as well as RBs Don't Matter and FTN, the Jets and Cowboys last year were two of the biggest flow chart defenses for WRs.

  • Jets: No. 32 in defensive dropback EPA (0.291) and pass DVOA (45.3%)
  • Cowboys: No. 1 in largest fantasy boost allowed to WRs (+5.1)

Bang a gong.

Amon-Ra St. Brown (Lions) vs. Jets: The season hasn't opened smoothly for the 1-1 Lions. In Week 1, they barely beat the Saints in overtime, and then in Week 2 they lost by 10 points to the Bills. Still, they have scored 31 points in back-to-back games, they enter Week 3 with a three-day rest advantage, and St. Brown is the No. 1 WR in Utilization Score (97, per our Fantasy Life Utilization Report). Opening the year with consecutive games of 20+ fantasy points, St. Brown is already in midseason form (19-209-4 receiving, 27 targets). QB Jared Goff tends to dominate in Weeks 1-4 (24-14 ATS, 22.4%) and indoors (48-28-1 ATS, 20.8% ROI, per Action Network). Boxes checked.

Rashod Bateman (Ravens) vs. Cowboys (in Brazil): With WRs Zay Flowers (hamstring) and Ja'Kobi Lane (wrist, IR) out last week, Bateman was one of my favorites, and he performed (7-88-1 receiving, nine targets, 95% route rate, 93 Utilization Score). With Flowers still uncertain for this week, I like Bateman once again, especially since the Cowboys in the back seven could be without LB DeMarvion Overshown (hamstring), CB Cobie Durant (hamstring), FS Malik Hooker (forearm) and No. 3 S P.J. Locke (foot). Plus, at Maracanã Stadium the Ravens have an edge over the Cowboys playing on grass (vs. turf) and outdoors (vs. indoors). For the season, I have a bet that the Ravens will miss the playoffs, but I can't imagine them not beating my Cowboys this week in Rio de Janeiro. For his career, QB Lamar Jackson has been elite away from home (36-22 ATS, 20.2% ROI).

Week 3 Scoring Upgrades: Xavier Worthy at Dolphins & Deebo Samuel vs. Cardinals

Sometimes upgrades are as simple as: "This team is going to score a lot of points, so I need to bump up the WRs."

This week, the Chiefs are No. 2 in implied team total (28.75 points); the 49ers, No. 3  (28.25).

Upgrades warranted.

Xavier Worthy (Chiefs) at Dolphins: I can't believe I'm saying this, but … Worthy almost looks like the No. 1 WR for the Chiefs. In terms of the production, no (8-43-1 receiving). But in terms of the usage, yes (13 targets, 90% route rate, 24% air yard share, 33% end-zone target share, 61 Utilization Score). And the 2-0 Chiefs look pretty good (No. 3 offense, 32.0 points per game). Although they're on the road, the Chiefs should be fresh off two straight home games, especially compared to the Dolphins, who have just played back-to-back West Coast road games. Plus, QB Patrick Mahomes tends to do well in Weeks 1-4 (20-13-1 ATS, 17.3% ROI). The Dolphins last year were No. 31 in defensive dropback SR (52.3%) and this week could be without EDGEs Chop Robinson (concussion) and Robert Beal (hamstring).

Deebo Samuel (49ers) vs. Cardinals: The 49ers have traveled almost 16,000 miles since the season started, and their home-field advantage is greatly reduced in this spot because the Cardinals play in division and on a similar grass surface, but the Niners are at least playing their second straight game at Levi's Stadium. Additionally, the Cardinals last year were No. 32 in defensive dropback SR (52.7%) and might be without CBs Will Johnson (neck), Garrett Williams (Achilles),\ and Max Melton (toe). With WRs Mike Evans (hip) and Demarcus Robinson (ankle) exiting last week with injury, Samuel saw an uptick in usage (80% route rate, 19% target share), and he might be the only true starting WR the 49ers have in this game.

Week 3 Indoors Upgrades: Devaughn Vele vs. Raiders & Xavier Hutchinson at Colts

In general, I want to be heavy on WRs playing indoors, where they don't need to worry about wind, temperature or precipitation. Here are two such WRs who stand out.

Devaughn Vele (Saints) vs. Raiders: After opening the season with consecutive road games, the Saints are back indoors at Caesars Superdome, where they have an amplified home-field advantage against the Raiders, who are out of conference and on turf (vs. grass). So the setup is good not only for No. 1 WR Chris Olave but also Vele, who has used the absence of No. 2 WR Jordyn Tyson (hamstring, IR) to strengthen his position in the offense (12-133-1 receiving on 16 targets, 92% route rate, 21% air yard share, 33% endzone target share, and a 74 Utilization Score). For the Raiders, CB Darien Porter (foot) and FS Treydan Stukes (concussion) might be out.

Xavier Hutchinson (Texans) at Colts: The Texans are on the road, but they've cut the home-field advantage for the Colts down to almost nothing because they are in division and play on a similar turf surface in a similar indoor stadium. Last week without WRs Nico Collins (hamstring), Tank Dell (knee, IR) and Jayden Higgins (knee, IR), Hutchinson had strong usage (9 targets, 85% route rate, 27% air yard share, 50% end-zone targets), and I doubt Collins will return this week against the Colts, who could be without CB Charvarius Ward (groin). It's dangerous, but if I were desperate I'd probably be willing to start Hutchinson in Guillotine LeaguesTM this week.

Week 3 Air Yards Upgrades: Denzel Boston vs. Panthers & Parker Washington vs. Patriots

The WRs who are targeted downfield (the guys with high aDOTs, air yard shares and WOPRs) have an elevated chance each week of enjoying a spike performance.

You can see aDOT, air yards and WOPR in our Fantasy Life Air Yards Tool. "WOPR" stands for "weighted opportunity rating," and it measures the overall quality of a player's aerial role in his offense by considering his share of targets and air yards.

Here are two air yard accumulators who have my attention this week.

Denzel Boston (Browns) vs. Panthers: Although he was drafted behind teammate KC Concepcion (24 vs. 39), the rookie Boston has been not just the No. 1 WR for the Browns (7-154-2 receiving, 11 targets, 95% route rate) but also the No. 1 WR in the league in air yard share (59%). Normally I don't want to be high on pass catchers in poor offenses, but the Browns actually showed something last week in a 23-19 road win against the Buccaneers in HC Todd Monken's second game. The Browns have an amplified home-field advantage against the Panthers, who are out of conference and on grass (vs. turf). I'm fine being aggressive on Boston as a Week 3 waiver wire add.

Parker Washington (Jaguars) vs. Pats: Washington entered the league in 2023 as a lowly sixth-round selection, but he has improved every year of his career (6.3 yards per target, 7.6, 8.9), and last season he was actually the No. 1 WR for the Jaguars (58-847-5 receiving, 95 targets) while displaying inside-outside utility and playmaking punt return ability (25-341-2). This season, he has continued to improve (12-181-1 receiving, 18 targets), and now he has the utilization to sustain No. 1 WR production. Despite playing alongside WRs Brian Thomas, Jakobi Meyers and Travis Hunter, the underappreciated Washington has elite underlying usage (39% target rate, 38% target share), which makes him the No. 3 WR in WOPR (89%), just behind Jaxon Smith-Njigba (103%) and Justin Jefferson (92%). The Jags last year had the No. 1 home-field advantage (+17.4, per NFElo), and this week they have an additional edge over the Pats, who are outside division and on grass (vs. turf). It's possible Washington could see shadow coverage from CB Christian Gonzalez … but last year the Pats were No. 31 in defensive pass DVOA against No. 1 WRs (47.2%), and they could be without CB Carlton Davis (neck) and SS Craig Woodson (shoulder).

Week 3 Offensive Injury Upgrades: Davante Adams at Broncos & DK Metcalf vs. Bengals

Here are a couple WRs who get upgrades because of offensive injuries.

Davante Adams (Rams) at Broncos: One of my 2026 fantasy favorites, Adams isn't the player he once was … but in his two Rams games (2025 Week 7, 2026 Week 2) without No. 1 WR Puka Nacua (hip), he has somehow looked like he's still one of the best WRs in the league (13-230-5 receiving, 18 targets). I will admit that the setup for this week is terrible. The Rams have traveled almost 17,000 miles so far this season (a league-worst mark), they're on a one-day rest deficit, and the Broncos are playing their second straight game in Denver, where they've had over the past five years the No. 2 home-field advantage (+7.42), and this week they have an even greater advantage against the Rams, who are outside of conference, on grass (vs. turf), and outdoors (vs. indoors). On top of that, the Broncos last year were No. 1 in defensive dropback SR (38.9%). But Nacua could be out once again, as well as No. 3 WR Jordan Whittington (quadriceps). Sometimes friends come clothed as enemies.

DK Metcalf (Steelers) vs. Bengals: For the season, Metcalf has putrid production (8-67-0 receiving). But his utilization has been pristine (19 targets, 100% route rate, 42% air yard share, 33% end-zone target share). At some point, he'll have a big game. Why not this week? The Bengals last year were No. 29 in defensive dropback SR (50.3%) and defensive pass DVOA (26.9%), and Metcalf's usage could sustain into Week 3 if No. 2 WR Michael Pittman (foot) and RB Rico Dowdle (toe) are sidelined.

Week 3 Defensive Injury Upgrades: Matthew Golden vs. Falcons & Dontayvion Wicks at Bears

Here are a couple WRs who get upgrades because of defensive injuries.

Matthew Golden (Packers) vs. Falcons: No. 1 WR Christian Watson has gotten most of the hype (and deservedly so) with how he has opened the season (10-188-3 receiving), but if you look at their utilization, Golden (88% route rate, 27% target share, 33% air yard share, 40% end-zone target share) and Watson (87% route rate, 27% target share, 33% air yard share, 40% end-zone target share) have been doppelgängers, and Golden's production (aside from the lack of TDs) has been on par (10-153-0 receiving). On top of that, Golden could get even more work without No. 3 WR Jayden Reed (back). The Packers have an amplified home-field advantage against the Falcons, who are out of division, on grass (vs. turf) and outdoors (vs. indoors) … and they will be without CBs A.J. Terrell (groin-IR) and possibly Billy Bowman (Achilles) in the secondary. HC Matt LaFleur has historically done well at home (37-24 ATS, 16.3% ROI) and in Weeks 1-4 (19-11 ATS, 22.3% ROI).

Dontayvion Wicks (Eagles) at Bears: He's no replacement for departed No. 1 WR A.J. Brown, but Wicks has put up numbers in his first two games with the Eagles (7-147-1 receiving), and his usage has been more than subsistence level (77% route rate, 19% target share, 28% air yard share). With RB Saquon Barkley (shoulder) and TE Dallas Goedert (knee) potentially out for Week 3, Wicks could have an even larger role against the Bears, who last year were No. 3 in largest fantasy boost allowed to WRs (+3.8) and could be without two secondary starters in CB Tyrique Stevenson (hamstring) and CB Kyler Gordon (calf, PUP).
